You're not supposed to wash your hair before dying it. I would not wash it and leave the dye in according to the instructions - usually about 20 minutes.

the braids put a lot of tension on the hair... so wash it and let it be for at least 1-2 weeks.. no heavy oils... then color... just pick a color brand meant for your hair texture...if u color now, you will have breakage from the braids, but the hair dye will make it seem like a lot more... so let it rest first....

Dyes arent really good for your hair...Rinses are better for your hair. I use a brand named jazzing, it comes in a fuscia colored bottle , its a semi permanant to permanant hair coloring. After you wash you hair put the rinse in and leave it in for 30 min to a hr depending on how deep you want the color, wrap your hair and sit under a hair dryer, then wash it again. It doesnt matter how long ago you took your braids out to do a rinse.

Before dying your hair you are supposed to wash it, but not condition it. However, depending on how relaxed your hair is, you should wash and condition it, wait a day or two, wash it with shampoo, dry it, then dye it.
