I am growing my hair out from a short Halle Berry type cut. The length is to my ears, but the back is shorter because it was shaved. I want to et a sew in and I have never had one before. I was wondering how much hair I need because I know that they braid the hair first.

you mean sew-in extentensions? sorry honey your hair is too short. Even if it were remotely possible at 4-5 inches, your extensions would have to be just as short, or you'd have layered hair on the side, like a mullet. A safe length for them is more like 6-8 inches at minimum.
